Painted glass refers to two different techniques of decorating glass, both more precisely known by other terms.

Firstly, and more correctly, it means enameled glass, normally relatively small vessels which have been painted with preparations of vitreous enamel, and then fixed by a light firing to melt them and fuse them to the glass surface.

Sandblasting is one way of etching glass that creates a look associated with frosted glass. Sand is naturally abrasive and when combined with fast moving air, will wear away at a surface. The longer the sandblasting technique is applied to an area, the more the sand will wear away at the surface and the deeper cut.

Etched glass applies a light, frosted texture to glass via sandblasting. Etching can be done evenly over an entire piece, or areas of the glass.
